PARENT MENTOR PROGRAM

Become a Parent Mentor / Conviertase en Padre Mentor

Are you looking for a way to make a difference in your child’s school? HACES is a partner of the Parent Engagement Institute.  We are part of a growing network of over 1,660 Parent Mentors supporting 33,123 students at 225 schools in the Parent Mentor Program across the State of Illinois.

Who can join?
HACES runs the Parent Mentor Program in six elementary schools in the Waukegan School District. To participate in the program, you must have a child that attends one of the following six elementary schools: Carman-Buckner Elementary, Glen Flora Elementary, Glenwood Elementary, Lyon Magnet School, North Elementary and Whittier Elementary. Legal status, level of education, and language skills are not a barrier to your involvement in your child’s school. No previous experience is required.

Why the Parent Mentor Program?
Parent Mentors help close persistent equity gaps in our children’s schools by volunteering in the classroom for two hours a day supporting students for the duration of a semester. Together, we support each other to pursue our goals and unite the school community for long-term change.

What do Parent Mentors do?
Parents work one-on-one or in small groups with students who need extra support in the classroom. Parent mentors are provided necessary training, compensated with a modest stipend, and offered weekly workshops on professional development skills in academic instruction and leadership.
